CP English 9
Welcome to CP English 9! This is a literature based course where you will be reading a variety of texts including novels, plays, short stories, poems, speeches, and articles. In addition, different varieties of writing and discussions will be incorporated throughout the course. Students will expand their knowledge of the writing process, develop their discussion and research skills, and expand their vocabulary. Below is an outline of the CP English 9 curriculum, as well as the course syllabus and some sample student work. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the information below.
Texts We Read
Of Mice and Men (novel)George and Lennie, migrant farm workers, are traveling around the country looking for small jobs in order to make money. They dream one day of owning their own ranch and not having to work for other people. When George and Lennie arrive at a new ranch in California, their friendship is tested. Set during the Great Depression, Of Mice and Men explores the main ideas of the American Dream, hope, and friendship.
Animal Farm (novel)When the animals on Manor Farm are tired of how they are being treated by Mr. Jones, their master, they revolt and chase him off the farm. The animals are then left up to running the farm themselves. The challenge lies in deciding who their new leader is going to be and establishing rules they will all abide by. What will happen to Manor Farm now that the animals are in charge?
Short Stories
We will read a variety of short stories such as "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Gift of the Magi," The Necklace," and "The Most Dangerous Game." Students will focus on universal life experiences that are communicated through these stories; they will also learn about different literary devices to help them gain a greater understanding of these stories and how the author is communicating their message.
Lit Circle Books*For our literature circle unit, students will be reading a novel they select in a book club- type format with their classmates. The books students can choose from are as follows: The Secret Life of Bees, Becoming Maria, Patron Saints of Nothing, On the Come Up, Lord of the Flies, With the Fire on High, All We Have Left, and The Book Thief.
*These titles are subject to change |
Sample Student Projects
Throughout CP English 9, you will have opportunities to demonstrate your learning in many different ways. It is my hope that you find many of these assignments enjoyable and view them as an opportunity to make them your own creation. Below are some student project samples from previous years where students were able to let their creativity shine while showing their knowledge of a topic.
For our Romeo & Juliet unit, a student created a one-minute summary video of the play and included background information about Shakespeare and Romeo & Juliet. You can watch the video above.
During our Of Mice and Men unit, students connected a main idea present in the text with a recent news article. They discussed the main idea in the book and explained how that main idea is still relevant today. Check out a student's example above.

During our Animal Farm unit, students were tasked with creating their own propaganda poster that a character in the book could have used in the text. An example of one of these projects is above.
