Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
What do I need to bring to class each day?
Please make sure you have the following items each day for class:
- Your charged Chromebook
- Our current class text
- Your independent reading book
- A pencil or pen
- *While not mandatory, I highly recommend using a planner to keep track of your assignments for all of your classes. If you choose to use one, please bring it to class with you
Will I have homework?
Sometimes. However, I try not to assign homework on a regular basis. The most common homework assignments you will have is to either finish an assignment you did not finish in class or to prepare for an assessment.
What is the policy on late work?
Late formative assignments will only be credited at up to 60% of the original point value. Late summative assessments will be subject to a 10% deduction for a one week period of time. If you do not submit a summative assessment within one week , you will have the option to use a summative retake to earn credit for the assignment. As a reminder, you are allocated three retakes per semester, per class. When absent, please check Google Classroom and the slides for make-up work.
With all of this being said, please come talk to me if something is going on in your life or at home. We can work together to figure out an action plan for your work. I understand that life happens, and we all need some grace at different points in time. In addition, while I understand it is not always possible, I do appreciate you coming to talk to me beforehand if you are going to have trouble completing your work on time.

Is there extra credit?
The simple answer is no. However, there may be opportunities for extra points throughout the school year that will be offered to everyone. My biggest recommendation is to submit all work on time and always do your best; this will be the most beneficial for your grade!
Will I be able to read a book that I want to read?
Yes! There are several opportunities throughout the school year for you to read a book of your choice. First, we will be doing independent reading in class, so you will be able to select your own independent reading book from the library, the classroom library, or from one you have at home. Second, we will do a literature circle unit during the year where you will be able to select a book from a short list and read it with some of your classmates. You can find a preview of the books offered for lit circles under the CP English 9 or CP English 10 tabs.
Will I have to write a lot of essays and take a lot of tests?
There will be some essays and tests throughout the year. However, there will also be projects that will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge in more creative ways. If you want to see some examples, go under your course page above and check out the sample student projects at the bottom.
